Engineer starts with an extra Crossbow meant for defending the base. A September playthrough expected the crossbow and then had to craft the first chunk with an axe anyway, so the crossbow does not replace gathering tools.

How do you use Crossbow?
Use the Crossbow on nights and raids while you still need the island to hold. Keep an axe and a pickaxe in the loop. The crossbow does not gather wood or stone.
